The set can be followed with minimal knowledge of 3DS Max as you are guided through each piece of the model. No prior knowledge of rigging and animation is needed and after running through the tutorial you’ll have a finished animated scene ready to be textured and expanded on.Further to the main APU component there are several appendix projects within the set. The creation of a sentinel, pilot and environment for your scene are also included and taught with the same excellent quality you’ll see watching the main APU phase of the DVD.For those of you who want an all inclusive set on creating a hero piece and putting it in a scene then this is the set for you!Detailed DescriptionAPU modelling – much of the set involves using polymodelling starting with basic primitives to create the complicated shapes you’ll see in the finished model. Other techniques are included such as using the FFD modifier to change shapes and creating pipework with nurbs curves . The tutorial then continues up the mech to the torso, arms and guns finishing off with the pilot cabin and control systems.Rigging – The main focus of this section of the DVD is using a bone system with constraints to control the different joints of the APU. The tutorial also shows how to create working piston systems along with simplifying the bone structure down to coloured coded shapes with which the entire mech can be controlled easily.Animation - Having rigged the model, Ocnod will run through the different areas of the model that can be animated. This consists of making a walk cycle where the APU points and fires the guns complete with recoil and a muzzle flash that can be found in the appendix. For those of you worried about the performance of your computer there’s also a section on optimising the model for animation.Sentinel modelling – This 8 hour standalone section of modelling will show you how to create a superbly detailed (140,000 polygons!) sentinel. Every tiny claw and eyepiece is covered and the process finishes with animating each of the tentacles for use in a scene with your rigged APU.Pilot and environment – Finally to get you ready to visualise your storyboard a simply pilot model (fully clothed) and environment have been recorded. The environment is a large walkway (much like those in the film) and heavy door ready for a dramatic entrance of the model.
